Description
Five years after the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and less than a decade until the target mark, the EXPO comes at a crucial point for the global community, in particular in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and its socioeconomic effects at global level. The pandemic reminds of the importance of international collaboration in preventing, mitigating and enhancing resilience in the face of global crises.
Against this background, the event will have a two-fold purpose. On the one hand, it will be an opportunity to take stock on the global, national, regional and/or local efforts to achieve the SDGs by 2030. On the other hand, it will be a welcome occasion to take further the proposal by President von der Leyen for a Global Recovery Initiative to link debt relief and investment to the SDGs in order to promote a green, digital, inclusive and resilient recovery. Global challenges can only be addressed by working together across borders and at the multilateral level, while upholding the SDGs. The event would benefit of the presence of international leaders such as the UN Secretary General to prop up collective action for a truly transformational path.
